Club Information

In 1877, St.Mirren, which had until then been a Rugby Football Club, decided to switch codes to Association Football, and St.Mirren Football Club was born. St.Mirren's first game was against Johnstone Britannia. The result of this match was 1-0 with John Goold being the goalscorer. When the Scottish Football League was formed St.Mirren, along with their Paisley rivals Abercorn were founder members and competed in the first season of league football in Scotland which began in 1890. That first championship was won by Dumbarton however, unfortunately St.Mirren finished in second bottom spot between Vale of Leven and Cowlairs. Of the original found members of the League only St.Mirren, Dumbarton, Rangers, Celtic and Hearts still exist and compete at top level today. The early years of this century saw rapid development for St.Mirren with the formation of a limited company, The St.Mirren Football Club Limited, and the move to the site of the present stadium at Love Street. Saints had previously played matches at Shortroods, Greenhill & Westmarch. St Mirren have appeared in the Scottish Cup Final on 6 occasions with three victories. The League Cup on the other hand has not seen very much success at all. In fact Saints only appearance in the Final came in 1955 when Aberdeen where victorious 2-1. A number of great players and managers have served time at Love Street. Alex Ferguson is of course the first name that springs to mind. But other names such as Tony Fitzpatrick, Paul Lambert, Tommy Bryceland, Archie Gemmill & Davie Lapsley among others are never far away when talking about the all time great St Mirren sides.
