Michael Essien is a Ghanaian defensive midfielder, who currently plays for English Premier League side Chelsea. He joined Chelsea from Olympique Lyonnais in 2005 for £24.4m. He is currently the most expensive African footballer of all time. He missed the majority of the 2008-2009 EPL season due to a serious knee injury, but he managed to return late in the season.

Strengths

Essien has very good Determination (20), Adaptability (18) and Pressure (18) stats. Which is good for a midfielder like him. He also has good mental stats, showing that he is brave, aggressive and consistent. Which is also important. He has very good Natural Fitness, Stamina and Strength, meaning he can run all day and never give up. Essien is a very versatile player, and he is dangerous when he shoots from long range.

Weaknesses

Essien does not handle controversy all that well and he sometimes has a very short fuse for his temper. He does not have a very good influence and he should not be made captain unless absolutely neccessary. His dribbling and finishing need some polishing off and he needs to work on his corners. He would not be in the top 5 penalty takers due to his mediocre stat.

Conclusion

Michael Essien is one of the most consistent mdfielders on Football Manager and he can always be relied upon to put in a good performance. He can slot into any team easily, but you will find it very challenging to lure him away from Chelsea.
